The purpose of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is to offer a curriculum to home-schooled youth to supplement and complement their home-school curriculum. Established in January of 2016, the official name of the local STEM program is STEM OF THE TRIAD. Classes meet at Central Triad Church, 2935 Cole Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

As a community service, Triad Woodcarvers Club began teaching woodcarving to students enrolled in the STEM program. The first class was conducted on August 15, 2019 with Tim Trudgeon and Will Crawford serving as instructors. Semesters were composed of 14 weeks of classes and offered enrolled students the opportunity to take part in various woodcarving projects. Based on the popularity of the program, it was expanded to include an Advanced Class in addition to the Beginners Class.

Today (November 19, 2020) was the final day of class for the woodcarving students—Beginners and Advanced.  Three female and six male beginning students completed a series of carvings ranging from a basic Mushroom to a Moravian Star.  The two, male, Advanced students completed a beautiful Santa as their final project.  Will Crawford served as lead instructor with Charles Griffin, Stewart Hodges and Carol Adair.

Pictured here are students in the Advanced Class. These students have successfully completed the Beginners Class and have elected to advance their woodcarving skills. Projects include a relief carving, chip carving, wood spirit, Santa Claus and others.
