Chet Card of Everett, MA and Gene Matheson of Ipswich, MA were invited to exhibit woodcarvings on April 15, 1964 at the Houghton Library in Lynn Massachusetts. Several people who attended the exhibition teamed up with Chet and Gene, this small group would grow into the NEWC.

In November 1975, three men from Wheeling , West Virginia, found themselves driving to Steubenville, Ohio to attend meetings of the Stubenville Smoking Woodcarvers Club. Bob Ligglebeck, Bill Zimmerman, and Irwin Zimmerman (no relation) decided the monthly trip to Steubenville was not as fun as it had once been, so they decide to form a local club.
